JPEG vs PNG: Which Format Should You Export from Figma?
Choose between JPEG and PNG based on image content, transparency, file size, and how the asset will be used.
The quick answer
Use JPEG for photographs when smaller files matter and transparency is not needed. Use PNG for lossless graphics, sharp edges, or transparency. Choose based on the asset and delivery requirements, then inspect the exported result.
When is JPEG a good choice?
JPEG uses lossy compression and is often practical for photographs and complex imagery. It does not support transparency, and aggressive compression can introduce visible artifacts around edges, text, or fine patterns.
When is PNG a good choice?
PNG uses lossless compression and supports transparency. It can work well for interface graphics, logos, and assets where clean edges matter, although photographic PNG files may be considerably larger.
Compare formats for the actual asset
Export a representative sample in both formats when unsure. Compare the file size, transparency, edges, and appearance at the intended display size. WebP and AVIF may also be options for web delivery if supported by your product pipeline.
Turbo Image Compressor & Exporter can export and convert Figma images between PNG and JPEG, as well as WebP and AVIF.
