How to Reduce Image File Size for a Faster Website

A practical workflow for right-sizing, compressing, and converting images without sacrificing the details your interface needs.

Why do image sizes affect websites?

Images are often a substantial part of a page’s transferred data. Large files can take longer to download, especially on slower connections. Optimizing dimensions and format can reduce bytes sent to a device.

Use dimensions that match the layout

Export an image close to the largest size it will be displayed, accounting for responsive layouts and high-density screens. A very large source may waste bandwidth when the page displays it at a much smaller size.

Choose a suitable format and compression level

Compare WebP or AVIF for supported web delivery, JPEG for many photographic use cases, and PNG when lossless output or transparency is needed. Use a quality setting that keeps visible details acceptable and test across representative images.

Optimize and review Figma assets

Turbo Image Compressor & Exporter can batch compress, convert, and resize Figma assets. Check the output file sizes and visual quality, then confirm that your website or app pipeline supports the formats you plan to deliver.
